Behnam Askari
The artist was born in Iran in 1987. he has lived in the UK since 2002. From an early age Behnam had a great interest in painting. For a number of years He was taught art privately by Yousef Hoseini in his native Tehran. It was Hoseini who introduced him to oil paints and to the world of colours. He first exhibited his oil paintings for friends and family when he was just 13 years old. Behnam moved to London at the age of 15.
After studying two years at Quinton Kynaston School he was accepted for the Foundation Course at Bryan Shaw, University of Arts London. Behnam then studied BA Fine Arts at Central Saint Martins, University of Arts London. During his studies there he developed his vision in Art, Design and History of Art. While still a student Behnam held solo art exhibitions in London including at Lauderdale House, Highgate 2006 and at Burgh House, Hampstead 2008.
Behnam was commissioned to do a variety of designs on glass for the fashion designer Nicole Farhi’s Home Section in 2010. At his final exhibition at Central Saint Martins he exhibited his art work to the public . Much of Behnam’s work reflects the influence of his Persian heritage combined with western influences. After graduating in 2013 Behnam decided to combine his passion for art with his avid interest in Interior Design.
He studied for a Postgraduate diploma at KLC London where he was introduced to the technical side of design. Many of Behnam’s works are inspired by nature. In some of his interior design projects he has brought nature from the outside to the inside of the building by, for example , painting trees from outside in the garden on canvas to be hung in the interior of the house. In 2017 Behnam donated a painting to Holiday House London for Breast Cancer research. His painting was auctioned and raised a four figure sum for the charity.
Especially important to his art is the way he uses colours, often vibrant and in various shades, to give light not only to the space but also to the eyes of those looking at it. Behnam likes to emphasise texture in his work as a way of providing depth and focus.
